Addressing the Five Levels of Healing
In spite of the fact that many physicians today don’t understand it, or worse think it’s hogwash, Energy Medicine is one of the medicines of the future. Dr. Andrew Weil, pioneer of Integrative Medicine education at the university level and the mentor of my collaborator Dr. Julie Reardon, promotes the inclusion of Energy Medicine in modern clinical models:
“An integrative approach to health means addressing not only our physical body, but our energetic body as well.”
Energy Medicine clears energetic blockages to healing, enhances longevity, and increases vitality. It takes advantage of the transformative and life-giving forces that exist all around us. These are the tools used to address the 5 Levels of Healing.
History of Energy Medicine
In the 1970s, my mentor C. Norman Shealy, MD was one of the primary founders of the Holistic and Integrative Medicine movement when he helped found the American Holistic Medical and Nurses Associations. This organization (eventually renamed the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine) took an enormous leap for Western medicine putting aside the rationalistic model that exercises excessive scientism in favor of a deeper understanding of the human condition and health. Their statement:
“The primary objective of the practice of holistic medicine is the experience of optimal or holistic health. Optimal health is the unlimited and unimpeded free flow of life force energy through body, mind, and spirit.”
Three of AHMNA’s most important principles are the absolute heart of what I do with White Horse Medicine™. These are 1) that unconditional love is life’s most powerful healer, 2) optimal health is much more than the absence of sickness, and 3) illness is viewed as a manifestation of the whole person, not as an isolated event.
In the 1980s, Norm grounded holistic and energy medicine into the mainstream with his studies on medical intuition. His groundbreaking research with intuitive Caroline Myss, PhD changed lives and led to her highly popular PBS specials. Her game changing book Anatomy of the Spirit appeared in 1997 and defined the energetic anatomy of the human body.
Also in the 1990s, three mainstream physicians published books on the interaction of the human energy field and medicine. Christiane Northrup, MD, wrote about energy anatomy in her best-selling iconic book, Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom. Judith Orloff, MD, wrote about her use of clairvoyance in the practice of psychiatry in her book, Second Sight. And psychiatrist and neuroscientist Mona Lisa Schultz, MD wrote, Awakening Intuition, which explained how to use the mind-body network for insight and healing.
All three of these groundbreaking works address the various levels of healing and the energetic pathways that Energy Medicine utilizes. I believe Energy Medicine has the potential to eradicate the opioid epidemic in this country. It is precisely how I’ve managed decades of pain after a spinal cord injury without the use of painkillers.
The following is a description of each of the therapeutic modalities that my practice employs to promote health and healing at the various five levels:
This centuries old branch of phytotherapy is a sacred partnership with Plant Nation which complements and enhances conventional medical treatments. I counsel clients on the use of therapeutic grade essential oils in their overall healthcare strategy. I also share the Sacred Rings techniques created by Dr. Shealy. These use essential oils on acupuncture circuits to restore DHEA and calcitonin, and reduce free radicals to enhance the regeneration of telomeres. My specialty is custom blended bath salt formulas for the relief of chronic illness and/or emotional distress.
I practice a specific, focused use of homeopathy based on the work of the late Ananda Zaren. Certain remedies are used to support the resolution of the mental wounds and emotional distress syndromes of chronic illness and old traumas. By witnessing the Wound, the Wall, and the Mask in certain personality types, a corresponding healing response can be initiated with an ultra low potency homeopathic remedy. For more on this modality, I wrote about one personal experience with this therapy, as well as the unique woman who pioneered it around the world in this blog post.
Also known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), this emerging field utilizes red and infrared light to affect the cell mitochondria. Photobiomodulation/LLLT is currently generating an average of 200 scientific studies a year to examine its efficacy for both inhibiting pain and stimulating healing. It has been proven effective in conditions from back pain to surgical wounds, kidney disease to dementia. Successful studies have been generated by researchers around the world from institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Northwestern University, Cairo University, University of Johannesburg and many others.
Alpha-Stim is an electrotherapy device prescribed around the world by physicians and other healthcare professionals to effectively treat chronic, acute, and post-traumatic pain, as well as anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The physician-invented technology addresses the fact that the body is actually a complex series of electrical impulses controlling all physiological functions. Alpha-Stim treatments amplify some systems and deactivates others in a fine-tuning process called neuromodulation. This unique pain relief and depression treatment device can produce beneficial effects after even a single treatment. Utilizing devices similar to these in the 1990’s I cured chronic daily pain after a spinal cord injury. It can changes lives.
Guided Imagery & Meditation
Guided imagery (sometimes called guided meditation, visualization, and guided self-hypnosis) is a gentle but powerful technique that focuses the imagination in proactive, positive ways. It can be as simple as an athlete’s 5-second pause, just before leaping off the diving board, imagining how a perfect dive feels when slicing through the water. Or it can be as complex as imagining the busy, focused buzz of thousands of loyal immune cells, swarming out of the thymus gland on a search and destroy mission to wipe out unsuspecting cancer cells. This is one of the modalities that I personally used in 1985 to walk again after being paralyzed by a vascular event. I utilize the latest, scientifically proven imagery products and techniques to leverage neuroplasticity to enhance neural retraining. Over the past 40 years, the effectiveness of guided imagery has been validated by research, demonstrating its positive impact on health, wellness, attitude, behavioral change and peak performance.
BioMat’s use of far infrared rays, negative ion therapy, and superconducting pure amethyst crystals delivers soothing relief for a wide range of health issues. The BioMat’s unique medical and therapeutic properties are based on Nobel prize-winning research into ionic channels and the same infrared technology that NASA identified as the safest and most beneficial type of light wave. By producing deep-penetrating, far infrared rays along with negative ions that activate the body at the molecular level, the BioMat is capable of administering deep, soothing stimulation of the body’s natural healing response.
Indigenous Healing Ritual & Ancestral Medicine
Healing ritual is the original form of Energy Medicine. These traditional forms of healing are thousands of years old and exist in every culture around the world. Chronic illness and pain often have roots in childhood wounds, soul loss, past life trauma, or ancestral trauma. My methods are a blend of Celtic, Indigenous Peruvian, Reiki, and other techniques guided by my own spiritual allies and angels. I also employ concepts inspired by Metagenealogy and Ancestral Medicine to identify and witness ancestral trauma and inherited psychosocial stress. In witnessing the past, we are empowered to resolve it.
The power of neuroplasticity can be explained with the simple statement, “Your belief becomes your biology.” Ancient tribal cultures and indigenous medicine people have always known this. Now neuroscientists do. I’ve been using and benefiting from words and stories as medicine for decades. Sharing techniques for utilizing ethnoautobiography, the creative arts, and writing to enhance and stimulate your innate healing response is a particular joy for me. Watch for 2018 classes using the power of story in healing.
