“If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people. The relationship between our ancestors and ourselves is like the plant of corn that is the continuation of the seed of corn.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh
Each of us carries the secret history of our ancestors whether we realize it or not. We are genetic links in a chain stretching both before and after our own life experiences for generations. The seven shadows of illness, abandonment, betrayal, abuse, addictions, violence, and poverty are to be found in almost all families at one time or another. And we can choose to heal our ancestral lineages and ourselves.
I see ancestral healing as a gift for the whole family. It is an honor to learn more about family histories, find empathy, and shed light on the past in order to benefit future generations. Next week I’ll share some life-changing stories of doing just this with friends and family using the tools of genealogical and historical research, storytelling, ritual, and prayer.
